Dear Families,
The Math Collective, a group that strives to provide high-quality math education that is accessible and equitable for all students works closely with the Engage curriculum that your children are engaging with a PS 321! They have created summer math activities for each grade that we wanted to offer you and your child as an opportunity to continue to practice mathematics this summer.
The best way to encourage your child to grow as a mathematician is to help them see math in their everyday lives. If you find yourself using numbers at any point in the day, try to include your child in your thinking. It’s okay if your child is not yet familiar with the specific kind of numbers or calculations you are doing; the important thing is that they see the role mathematics has in our world. It will also be helpful for your child to practice math activities daily, so we have attached a variety of activities from our curriculum, Engage NY, that review standards. We suggest following the calendar and doing at least one activity a day. These problems and activities should be familiar to your child, and able to be worked through independently. However, the more opportunities children have to explain and talk through their math thinking, the better. So, please feel free to encourage your child to do this work by asking them about their thinking for each problem/activity.
We hope you have a wonderful summer!
